General

University Hospitals is situated on the north east side of Coventry about 3 miles from the centre.  The Eye Unit within the University Hospitals opened in July 2006 and was previously housed as a city centre site.  The Optometry Department is integrated into the Eye Unit on the ground floor of the hospital, along with Consultant Outpatient Clinics, Eye Casualty and Orthoptics Department.  The design of the unit fosters a strong sense of teamwork between all the professionals involved.  The theatre is on the first floor and the ward is on the third floor of the hospital.

The Optometry Department consists of 15 full-time and part-time Senior Optometrists, 2 MTO Technicians, a dispensing facility and a full-time Administration team.  The total team consists of 21 members of permanent staff and 2 Pre-Registration students.

Job Description

The Pre-Reg student will be involved in a diversity of clinics which will include low vision, contact lenses, general refraction clinics and dispensing. A placement in private practice may be available on a regular basis.  Students are encouraged to participate in tutorials and will be involved in the day to day running of the department. A wide range of equipment is available and there are excellent library facilities on the hospital site.  Supervision is directed by the Clinical Lead Optometrist responsible for training and development of graduates in Optometry, and liaises closely with the external college assessor to the department.
