General
Sunderland Eye Infirmary , which is part of City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Trust, is one of the largest ophthalmic units in the Northern region with fourteen consultant ophthalmologists. It is a very progressive unit with a strong reputation for clinical excellence. Sunderland is in the heart of the North East of England, 10 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne. SEI is a stand-alone hospital set in a pleasant residential area 2 miles from the city centre. It enjoys a warm friendly atmosphere with very approachable and supportive staff.
The Optometry Department consists of five full time optometrists, four part time optometrists, one pre-registration optometrist, and two optical assistants. We also take up to twelve pre-registration optometrists from community general practice on block release. Pre-registration supervision is a team effort and several members of staff actively participate. This is a big advantage as the pre-reg' is therefore exposed to a variety of working practices.
Job Description
The Optometry Department at SEI offers a unique blend of specialised hospital services with a strong emphasis on co-managed care including cataract post-operative reviews, diabetic monitoring and glaucoma monitoring.
The pre-reg' has a structured timetable with all patients seen by appointment. The timetable includes refraction (all types), children's clinics, contact lenses (all types), computerised corneal topography (Orbscan), visual field analysis (Henson and Humphrey), low vision management clinics, routine City Hospitals Trust staff eye examinations. This gives the pre-reg plenty of opportunity for practising full routine examinations and dispensing in preparation for the PQE's
In addition there is ample opportunity to attend consultant out-patient clinics, diagnostic ultrasound, theatre, 24 hour casualty, Glaucoma Resource Clinic, Cataract Treatment Centre, Refractive surgery and Orthoptics.
We have regular teaching sessions and there is an onsite library, which subscribes to all the major ophthalmic journals. Access is available to the department computers including the internet.
