General

MREH is one of the largest provincial Eye Hospitals in the country, the Department of Ophthalmology providing the focus for postgraduate ophthalmic teaching in the North-West region and being part of a major Foundation Trust hospital. MREH has >20 Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeons, providing the full range of ophthalmic subspecialties.  The Optometry Department comprises ~20 full time members of staff, and includes Dispensing Opticians and Medical Technical Officers in addition to qualified and Trainee Optometrists. In August 2009 we moved to a brand new purpose built and highly equipped hospital on the central Manchester site.

Job Description

The Optometry Department is involved with the provision of a wide range of clinical services including the core services of adult and paediatric refraction, contact lens fitting, corneal topography, low vision rehabilitation, A-Scan biometry, B-Scan Ultrasonography, perimetry, colour vision, macular/OCT imaging and ophthalmic dispensing.  The department also has a significant extended role in glaucoma co-management, cataract services, and new patient assessment and macular treatment assessment clinics.  Trainee optometrists will be expected to participate and/or observe these extended role activities.  Routine eye examination experience will be provided at a community optometry practice.

 

Regular opportunities will be given to observe specialist clinics and Trainee optometrists will be expected to attend lectures, tutorials and other teaching opportunities provided by the optometric, orthoptic or ophthalmological staff.

Contract

  • The Trainee contract is for 12 months (start date to be discussed at appointment).
  • Salary is Band 4 (NHS Agenda for Change payscale April 2011, GBP18,402), with standard NHS terms and conditions applying (37.5 hour week contract, inc. 27 days leave with 8 general public holidays). 
  • Hospital accommodation may be available if required.
