General
Colchester is situated in north-east Essex near the sea and Suffolk countryside. London is one hour away by train. The Optometry Department has one Principal; two full time seniors, six sessional optometrists and support staff. We support and work closely with the ophthalmic department, which has seven Consultants, two Associate Specialists, four Staff Grade doctors, one ST3, and two ST2s.
We provide care in the partial sight clinic, (providing advice, information, optical aids and non-optical aids), contact lens clinic, refraction, corneal topography, dispensing, colour vision and visual field assessments (Goldmann and Humphrey).
We are also developing and expanding shared care clinics in glaucoma, cataract and macular clinics.
During the year all ophthalmic departments are visited, ophthalmology, surgery, photography, fluorescein angiogram, orthoptic etc. We also provide regular tutorials and mock exams.
We also organise block releases throughout the year to work with a friendly community practice to gain experience of community optometry work for both eye examinations and dispensing experience.
Friday afternoons are reserved for structured teaching.
